5 * Good* Reasons to Write a Birth Plan

Writing a birth plan isn’t just an opportunity to make your wishes clear, it’s also an opportunity to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for what lies ahead. Here are five reasons you should consider writing a birth plan before the big day.

1) USE IT AS YOUR GUIDE

It can be daunting to think about childbirth and birthing, and it’s a huge transition for you and your partner. It is always a good idea to have an understanding of what’s happening to your body during birth as well as an outline of what you hope to achieve during that time. A birth plan is exactly that—it’s a guide to desired birth goals. Writing down your goals helps make them more concrete. By writing these goals down, you are setting yourself up for success.

2) SHARE WITH YOUR PROVIDER

It’s a good idea to discuss your birth plan with your health care provider during one of your prenatal appointments. Make sure you also share any potential concerns or issues you have in relation to labor and delivery. Not only will they be able to help alleviate any worries, but they’ll also likely suggest ways you can make your birth plan a reality. Another option is to work with a certified doula; they can guide you through options when it comes time for delivery.

3) IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY TO THINK THINGS THROUGH

Knowing your options is one of the most important parts of informed consent. Thinking through each stage of labor and the options that could be offered to you allows you to make decisions on what does or does not feel best for YOU.

4) IT GETS YOU AND YOUR PARTNER ON THE SAME PAGE

Parts of labor can move quickly and without warning. Writing a birth plan helps the two of you think through every detail. It gives your partner a clear idea of what you’re hoping for during labor and delivery, which will make them feel more confident in supporting you during labor, also allowing them to be your voice when speaking for yourself feels difficult.

5) MAY HELP YOU COPE BETTER

Having a birth plan can help you feel prepared and confident in the moment. While nothing about birth is guaranteed, knowing the specific parts that matter to you most can allow you to let go of other pieces and settle into your birth.
