Breastfeeding While Entertaining a Toddler
Feeding an infant can feel all consuming and completing exhausting.
Add a busy toddler in the mix, and it might seem like things have reached a whole new level of chaos.
With the newly appointed big sister or brother, you might quickly find that they are frustrated or jealous of the extra time that baby needs as you establish a feeding routine. They might start throwing tantrums or increase their demand for attention. All this extra, both the needs of the new baby and the needs of your bigger kiddo, might bring up mixed feelings: guilt, frustration, worry, sadness, etc.
So how can we help big sibling cope during this time (and maybe give you a second to catch your breath)?
One option is creating a special basket of toys that are only available during feedings.
Older sibling(s) can sit next to or nearby while baby is being fed, playing with the preselected toys/items during the duration of the feed. This can often help make the event special for them as well; they get to be included in the process without the need for a parent to be trying to split their attention.
Depending on your kiddos interests, this might be: a baby doll they can feed at the same time that baby is feeding, a special coloring book, some small toys, or a comfort stuffie.
Sometimes it can be helpful to let them choose what they’d like to add to the basket to increase the buy-in.
Unfortunately, there’s no magic wand to speed up this adjustment period. Things might get a little harder before they get easier, and it’s always okay to ask for help. We have feeding specialists available to help you as you navigate this new normal, whether it’s issues with the feedings themselves, or help setting up a routine where everyone’s needs are being met.
Need a few ideas for what to include in the basket? Here are a few "busy boards" that might help keep your little engaged.
